Computer Worm

Unlike viruses that need you to click something, worms spread by themselves across networks. They find vulnerable computers and infect them automatically, then use those to infect more. One worm can spread to millions of computers in hours without anyone clicking anything.

Real-World Example

The Morris Worm (1988) infected a significant fraction of internet-connected computers by exploiting weaknesses in sendmail, the finger daemon, and weak passwords—it became the first large-scale internet incident and demonstrated that self-propagating code could cripple networks even without a destructive payload. Decades later, the Conficker worm (starting in 2008) spread to millions of systems worldwide by leveraging an unpatched Windows vulnerability and propagating through network shares and USB drives, forcing organizations into extensive cleanup efforts to regain control.
