Malware
Malware is like a digital disease for your computer. Just like you can catch a cold, your computer can catch malware - and it can spread from one computer to another. Some malware steals your information, some locks your files, and some just causes chaos. The good news? Unlike real diseases, there are simple 'vaccines' you can use.
What is Malware?
Malware (malicious software) is any software intentionally designed to cause damage to a computer, server, network, or user. This includes viruses, worms, trojans, ransomware, spyware, and more. Malware can steal data, encrypt files, spy on users, or give attackers remote access to systems.
Why Should You Care?
Malware is behind most cyberattacks against businesses. A single infection can lead to stolen customer data, locked systems, financial fraud, and regulatory fines. For small businesses, a serious malware infection can cost tens of thousands of dollars and weeks of downtime.

Real-World Example
In 2023, a small accounting firm opened an email attachment that looked like a client invoice. It was actually malware called Emotet. Within hours, the malware had stolen client financial data and credentials from their systems. The firm faced $75,000 in recovery costs and had to notify all clients of the breach.
How to Protect Against Malware
- 1.
Install reputable antivirus/anti-malware software
- 2.
Keep all software and operating systems updated
- 3.
Don't download software from untrusted sources
- 4.
Be cautious with email attachments, even from known senders
- 5.
Use a standard user account instead of admin for daily work
