Instead of attacking you directly, hackers infect a website they know you'll visit - like a predator waiting at a watering hole. Industry forums, supplier websites, or professional associations are common targets. You think you're safe because it's a trusted site, but it's been poisoned.

A targeted attack strategy where attackers compromise websites frequently visited by their intended victims, infecting visitors with malware when they access the legitimate site.

Watering hole attacks bypass employee security awareness by exploiting trust in legitimate, industry-specific websites that organizations actively use—making it difficult for users to distinguish a compromised site from a safe one. Attackers can maintain an undetected presence, establish persistent access to sensitive systems, steal credentials, and conduct espionage against high-value targets like defense contractors, energy operators, and financial institutions. The damage can cascade through supply chains, since compromising a single industry portal can infect many visiting organizations at once.

Real-World Example

In a watering hole attack, adversaries compromise a website they expect their targets to visit—such as an industry association portal or a specialized research site—and embed malicious code that serves malware or a fake software-update prompt to visitors. A user who accepts the prompt or whose unpatched browser is exploited unknowingly installs a remote-access tool, giving attackers a foothold inside the target organization. The technique succeeds not by attacking the target directly, but by poisoning a trusted resource the target naturally relies on.
