Deception Technology
Deception tech fills your network with fake files, fake credentials, and fake servers. Attackers waste time on fakes while revealing themselves. It's honeypots on steroids.
What is Deception Technology?
Advanced security approach using decoys, fake data, and lures throughout the network to detect and mislead attackers.
Why Should You Care?
Deception technology can collapse attacker dwell time—the difference between weeks and minutes of undetected access. When attackers interact with fake systems, credentials, or data, there is little ambiguity about malicious intent, cutting down the false positives that plague traditional monitoring. Organizations deploying deception can catch lateral movement and privilege escalation early rather than discovering them months later during forensics or ransom demands.

Real-World Example
An organization might deploy honeypot accounts and decoy file shares across its internal network. When a compromised set of contractor credentials is used to move laterally from the corporate network, the attacker touches a decoy system that no legitimate user has any reason to access. The deception trigger alerts the SOC before the attacker reaches production databases—an intrusion that, without deception in place, could go undetected until data was exfiltrated days later.
How to Protect Against Deception Technology
- 1.
Evaluate deception platforms
- 2.
Deploy decoy credentials throughout network
